Public Pension Plans: Membership in one of the California retirement systems is mandatory for all District employees who work half-time or more. Certificated staff (primarily teachers and administration) are enrolled in CalSTRS if they work .5 FTE or greater. All other District staff (classified employees) will be enrolled in CalPERS if they are contracted to work 4 hours or more per day. In addition, employees hired to work less than half-time who are already members of CalSTRS or CalPERS will be required to participate.
Things to note: (1) It is possible to be a certificated teacher in CalPERS (the classified retirement system) if you were already a CalPERS member prior to accepting a creditable certificated position. It is also possible to be a member of both CalPERS and CalPERS at the same time, and to be eligible for a dual retirement.
(2) CalSTRS members will not participate in Social Security while they are performing STRS-creditable service, whereas CalPERS members will participate in Social Security and CalPERS simultaneously.
