The Miller Creek School District staff, parents, and caregivers operate as one unified team dedicated to the success of every child. These agreements ensure that all interactions across our community are effective, respectful, and focused on our shared goals.
Professionalism & Civil Discourse
How we talk to and about our community matters. To maintain a supportive environment for students and staff, we commit to the following:
- Constructive Tone: We agree to remain respectful and solution-oriented, even when we disagree.
- Public Respect: We refrain from "calling out" individual staff members or students on public forums, grade level group chats, email threads and/or social media.
- Privacy First: Confidential student and staff information are never shared in community spaces.
- School staff can only share information about a child with their parent/guardian.
Official Communication Channels
We use specific channels to ensure you receive accurate, timely information without overwhelming your inbox.
Communication Schedule
To streamline updates and minimize digital fatigue, the district follows this weekly schedule whenever possible:
- Monday: Teachers
- Tuesday: Can Do! Education Foundation
- Wednesday: Home & School Club (HSC) / Specialists
- Thursday: Teachers
- Friday: Principals & District Office
Collaborating with Educators
When reaching out, focus on partnership:
- Be Specific: Provide context and clearly state the topic you’d like to discuss.
- Be Curious: Ask questions and remain open to the teacher’s professional perspective.
- Collaborate: Work together to find actionable solutions for your child.
- Know the Medium: Use email for brief updates; schedule a meeting for complex topics.
- Important Boundary: Please avoid impromptu conferences with teachers during drop-off or pick-up windows. Teachers are responsible for supervising an entire class of students at these times. Please schedule an appointment instead.
- Addressing Disagreements
- Seek Clarity: Start by asking for more information to ensure a full understanding.
- Stay Professional: Communicate concerns calmly and respectfully.
- Escalate Appropriately: If a resolution isn't reached, involve an administrator.
The Chain of Communication
Why it matters: Addressing concerns at the source ensures the people closest to the situation can work together to resolve a matter. Skipping levels often delays resolutions, as leadership must ultimately consult the teacher.
- Classroom Teacher/Counselor: For classroom learning, behavior, or grading, contact the Teacher or Counselor first.
- Site Administration: If unresolved, contact the Principal or Assistant Principal.
- District Administration: For policy or district-level programs, reach out to the relevant Director or Coordinator.
- Superintendent: If the issue remains after prior steps, contact the Superintendent’s Office.
- Board of Trustees: The Board addresses governance and policy once all other avenues have been explored.
Email Protocol
To support effective communication while protecting the well-being of our staff, we observe the following boundaries:
- Response Time: Email is for non-urgent matters. We aim to respond within 1–2 school days.
- Work-Life Balance: Staff are not expected to respond to emails during evenings, weekends, or school breaks.
- Efficiency: Keep emails brief and follow the Chain of Communication. When emails are addressed to more than one staff member, expect a response from one school representative.
- Civil: Staff are not required to respond to unprofessional or inappropriate communications.
Engagement Opportunities
We invite you to be an active part of our community through:
- Events: Back to School Night, Open House, and Family Conferences.
- Dialogue: Coffee Chats with the Principal/Superintendent
- Involvement: Site/District Committees, Volunteering, and Home & School Club, Can Do!, and ELAC events.
- Feedback: Annual surveys, public comment at Board Meetings
